With the new chassis comes a welcomed fresh look. It’s an evolution of the old car’s, but the neat blend of LED matrix headlights into an imposing front grille, a rakish roofline and neat behind make the latest model the sharpest-looking yet. Very arguably a more handsome beast than the Q7 or the BMW X5. Under the bonnet we have the powerful 3.0 V6 Diesel engine which produces 280bhp and 600nm of torque followed by an 8 speed trip tronic automatic gearbox which flies lovely through the gear range. Sharing a platform system with its posher VW-Group cousins grants it access to much of the same tech. Air suspension, four-wheel steering and active anti-roll bars are all on the options list, and all three trim levels get adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and leather seats as standard.

Now onto the interior , The Front leather heated seats are superbly comfy and have The R logo embroiled into them which looks stunning but also gives it a lovely finish. The highlight is Volkswagen’s Innovision Cockpit, a combination of a 12-inch and 15-inch screens which blend driving and infotainment functions together for what almost appears like a single huge, gently curving display.The larger touchscreen in particular features gorgeous graphics (including Google Earth mapping for the navigation system), rapid loading times and an interface which uses simple smartphone-style menus and a home shortcut. Other state-of-the-art technology includes a roadwork lane assist system, cross-traffic warnings, four-wheel steering, active lighting and cornering roll stabilisation. The height-adjustable active air suspension system and all-wheel steering promise to combine to make this an agile car on the road. This is a big, luxurious car, and as you’d expect, it’s roomy enough to swallow five people without any real issues. There’s plenty of room up-front, oodles of headroom, and in the rear, three adults will happily co-exist, especially thanks to the car’s flat(ish) floor. Your view from behind the wheel is dominated by what VW calls its Innovation Cockpit set-up. It’s a pair of screens running from the instrument binnacle and right across the dash and, currently, nothing in its class comes close in terms of scale.
Being able to group all of this technology behind a screen means the cabin is now clutter-free and elegantly realised with lots of airy space. The Innovision system, takes a leap forward in usability for three principle reasons: finally a car touchscreen operates as your phone might, swiping quickly and pinching accurately.
Tiles can be personalised easily to arrange your key data into sections. Because of the acreage, virtual function buttons are easy to access without the need to guide your finger home. On top of this, the Touareg offers a head-up display, Night Vision (displayed on-screen) and new matrix LED headlights, which Volkswagen claims are the most advanced it has fitted to any car.
In a nutshell, it’s a warm, friendly place to spend time, with big, comfortable multi-adjustable seats, and there’s a huge amount of room to play with. But given the car’s generous external dimensions, this shouldn’t be a surprise. The overall refinement and low levels of mechanical noise are what dominate your first impressions, and that colour your overall perception of the comfort of the car. Up front, the driver’s seat is supportive and large, and comes with a massive range of adjustment to make your driving experience an absolute delight.

The Volkswagen Touareg is a very safe car. It comes with the Volkswagen Group’s latest suite of safety systems such as – Assist with City Emergency Braking System and Pedestrian Monitoring, Intersection Assist (warning of cross traffic from front), Lane Assist (lane-
departure warning system) , Side Assist (Lane Change and Turn-off Assist), Automatic Post-Collision Braking System
Proactive occupant protection system (conditioning of the safety system as well as closing of windows and panoramic glass roof before a potential accident),
Driver Alert System (warning of fatigue), Night Vision , Dynamic Road Sign Display (showing road signs such as speed information and no overtaking)
IQ Light – LED headlights: people in a potential danger area are briefly flashed to make them more visible for the driver and as a warning and Front Cross traffic assist.
